Description
The sea is the element that transports Ulysses on the mythical return journey to Ithaca, recounted in the Odyssey. In Calypso Chair, Laura GuildA represents, through the weaving of a blue ribbon, the hero’s shipwreck on the island of Ogygia, an earthly paradise where he meets the nymph, Calypso. The golden chair enhances the ribbon motif, reminiscent of the color of the sea, swaying between the weave of the backrest and seat.
Like the artist, Calypso weaves with a golden shuttle: a gesture that unites the contemporary artist and the character, constituting a literal and evocative plot.
This work addresses the theme of emotional bonds, love, and expectation through the figures of the Odyssey: Ulysses and Calypso. Calypso Chair builds on GuildA’s previous work, which focused on the chair as a narrative element: an object to be manipulated, a sort of rectified ready-made that the artist uses to convey reflections on current events. The presence of the frame and the thread are recurring, and thanks to the latter, GuildA’s work conveys the idea of temporal rhythm, a rhythmic succession of elusive moments that follow one another.
