Description
Where are the Bees is one of the large sewn and painted drapes that make up the Set Sail To Somewhere Golden series, a project in which Coquelicot Mafille transforms fabric into a poetic manifesto. The floating work opens like a sail ready to set sail, evoking the processional banners of an imaginary pantheistic ceremony.
The work is structured in two registers that interact in powerful contrast: the upper section, dominated by a deep red like scorched earth, features a human figure feeding birds in flight. The phrases “WHERE ARE THE BEES” and “THEY ARE IN MY CHEST” run through the composition as a dual geographical and corporeal interrogation.
The lower section reverses the narrative: a black and white striped pattern welcomes five blue bees, sewn together and safe.
This work, arranged like a sail ready to set sail, takes a critical stance against a consumerist and ecocidal society. Its aim is to shake up and decolonize thinking in the face of the collapse of intertwined ecosystems. Where Are the Bees directs the gaze toward a still possible destination: a shared and more conscious world where the interconnection between all species can be restored before it’s too late.
