Aj Roi, Totem

A unique work by Aj Roi, created using a mixed media technique on a real road sign. The work measures 85 x 75 cm.

Description

Aj Roi transforms an authentic triangular traffic light warning sign into a powerful homage to Native Americans. The artist reinterprets the signal’s three circles (red, yellow, and green), transforming them into totemic masks from North American indigenous tradition, stacked vertically like a tribal totem.

The transformation in meaning is radical: an element of Western automotive modernity becomes the symbol of a culture devastated by the advance of European “civilization.” The road sign, an emblem of technological progress, is reappropriated to tell the story of those who have been overwhelmed by that progress. Aj Roi uses visual irony to create a short circuit between the contemporary world and historical memory. The three circles of the traffic light, which in their original function regulate modern traffic, become totemic faces that observe and remind us. It’s a powerful symbolic inversion: where once there was a signal commanding “stop, wait, go,” now there are the faces of a civilization that has been ordered to stop, wait, and finally disappear. In Native American culture, the totem represents much more than a simple artistic object: it is ancestral memory, tribal identity, and a spiritual connection with ancestors and nature. Each mask tells a story, embodies a spirit, and transmits teachings.
