Description
Aj Roi represents a powerful contemporary reflection on the conflict between individual interest and the collective good. The artist intervenes on an authentic street sign, transforming it into an ethical manifesto that questions the viewer about the nature of social justice. The composition develops around the universal symbol of the scale, where Aj Roi removes the original “LEX” from the “TRIBUNALE” sign and replaces it with an eloquent image: a single individual on the left scale juxtaposed with a group of figures on the right. This visual dichotomy crystallizes the moral dilemma at the heart of the work.
The road sign, an everyday object and symbol of civil law, becomes a tool of social denunciation in the artist’s hands. The choice to maintain the sign’s institutional framework amplifies the message: the rules of common life should protect the community, not legitimize individual selfishness. The work fits into the vein of conceptual street art, where Aj Roi demonstrates his ability to transform urban objects into powerful tools of communication. The technique of détournement —the reversal of an object’s original meaning—is applied here with surgical precision: the sign retains its institutional authority, but the message is subverted to denounce rather than prescribe.
The minimal design, with stylized black and white pictograms, ensures the message’s immediate readability, a fundamental characteristic of effective public art.
