Soft Boundaries. Borders as Zones of Contact
Art4Women presents a project at Lake Como Design Festival born from the encounter between ReWeave’s design approach and Laura GuildA’s artistic practice, on view from 12 to 20 September 2026 at the historic Villa Saporiti in Como.
A design object becomes an artistic surface and a symbolic space for encounter. On the occasion of the eighth edition of Lake Como Design Festival, Art4Women presents Soft Boundaries. Borders as Zones of Contact, a project bringing together the Milan-based innovative benefit startup, Los Angeles sustainable luxury brand ReWeave, and textile artist Laura GuildA.
The project will be presented from 12 to 20 September 2026 at Villa Saporiti in Como, as part of the Contemporary Design Selection, curated by Giovanna Massoni.
The collaboration interprets the Festival’s 2026 theme, “Border”, reimagining the boundary not as an element of separation, but as a space for connection: a territory where art, design, craftsmanship and sustainability come together to generate new meanings.
A dialogue between Milan and Los Angeles
Soft Boundaries. Borders as Zones of Contact stems from Art4Women’s work in creating connections between artists and the business world, developing projects in which contemporary art engages with design, communication, innovation and social responsibility.
The aim is to explore new models of collaboration capable of generating value for both artists and companies, with a particular focus on supporting female talent and using art as a means of expanding women’s access to new professional and economic opportunities, while contributing to the reduction of the gender gap.
Today, Art4Women works with an international community of artists and develops collaborations with companies through art branding projects, artist residencies, corporate collections, events, and initiatives related to social responsibility and ESG issues.
Its participation in Lake Como Design Festival offers a tangible example of this model: bringing together business and artistic talent to create an original project in which different languages, skills and perspectives can interact and enrich one another.
The collaboration with ReWeave reflects Art4Women’s international outlook and its ongoing relationship with the United States. In 2025, the startup was selected by the Italian Trade Agency for the Global Startup Program, taking part in an acceleration programme in Los Angeles. This dialogue between different creative ecosystems laid the foundations for a project that brings together skills, materials and perspectives united by a shared reflection on sustainability and the value of artistic and artisanal production.
ReWeave is a Los Angeles-based brand founded on the belief that luxury and sustainability can coexist. The company rescues fabric samples from interior design showrooms and transforms them into one-of-a-kind creations, designed and produced locally in Los Angeles. Its environmental commitment is complemented by a social dimension: a portion of sales supports organisations providing vocational training to people facing barriers to employment.
Laura GuildA, a German artist based in Milan, develops a practice at the intersection of contemporary art and textile techniques. Sewing, weaving, knitting, knotting and fibre work become tools through which she explores themes related to fashion, mass production, the environment and consumer society. In Soft Boundaries. Borders as Zones of Contact, her artistic research encounters ReWeave’s design culture, transforming textile into a shared space for connection.
When stitching becomes a boundary
The starting point for Soft Boundaries. Borders as Zones of Contact is ReWeave’s Versastool, an object characterised by a soft, layered form and upholstered in off-white sustainable fabric. Following an open call for artists, Art4Women entrusted the piece to Laura GuildA for her artistic intervention.
The artist moves across the textile surface with stitches in different colours, creating fluid, sinuous lines inspired by the shape of lips and the gesture of a kiss, understood as a universal symbol of encounter and connection.
A traditionally functional gesture thus takes on a new meaning. Stitching, normally used discreetly to join two pieces of fabric, emerges and becomes a visible mark: the boundary no longer separates, but becomes a zone of contact, a porous space in which different identities, materials and languages can meet and transform one another.
The resulting piece deliberately occupies an in-between space: seat and sculpture, product and artwork, functional surface and narrative skin. The design retains its original function, while the artistic intervention alters its perception and opens the object to a new symbolic dimension.
