Description
Avis is part of a series of portraits by Silvia Bigolin, freely inspired by “The Falls,” a book by Peter Greenaway that collects 92 fictional biographies of victims of Unidentified Violent Events, all connected to birds and flight. Life after a U.V.E. is marked by mysterious physical, metabolic, mental, and linguistic mutations. Through the convex surface of the eye, we watch these figures take on new traits. In Avis’s case, the body has reabsorbed the breasts and the last phalanx of every finger and toe. The circular format heightens the sense of looking through a porthole, a peephole, a lens that isolates and concentrates attention on the floating female figure — caught in a surreal event beyond her control.
