Photograph by Monica Taglietti, printed on Ferrania Special Coated Matt Paper, a 20% cotton matte paper that adds depth to the blacks and softness to the grays. The work, measuring 50 x 70 cm including the mat, captures all the tonal richness of Monica Taglietti’s monochrome photography.

Description

A sea of clouds stretches endlessly beneath a deep black sky. From the summit of Grignone (2,410 m), one of the iconic mountains of the Lombardy Prealps, Monica Taglietti captures a vision that transforms the Alpine landscape into an almost cosmic experience: the peaks emerge like islands from a vaporous ocean, suspended between earth and sky in a timeless dimension.

The composition is divided horizontally into three layers that create a pathos-filled atmospheric stratification: the pitch-black sky in the upper half of the image, the sea of clouds in the center, and the rocky peaks in the foreground, rooted in the mist. The monochrome black and white enhances the tonal contrasts, from the abysmal depth of the sky-blue black to the ethereal luminosity of the illuminated clouds, passing through the rocky grays of the peaks.

This photograph is part of Monica’s exploration of high altitude as a space for contemplation: it’s an experience of the gaze, capturing that moment when, having reached the summit after hours of climbing, the world reveals itself completely transformed. The mountain becomes a boundary between two worlds, a privileged vantage point from which to see the landscape with new eyes.
