Photograph by Monica Taglietti, printed on Ferrania Special Coated Matt Paper, a 20% cotton matte paper that adds depth to the blacks and softness to the grays. The work, measuring 40 x 50 cm including the mat, captures all the tonal richness of Monica Taglietti’s monochrome photography.

Description

A mountain emerges from the fog like a geological apparition. Monica Taglietti captures the Roda di Vaèl, an imposing Dolomite formation in the Catinaccio group, shrouded in vapor that dissolves its upper contours while the rocky base remains clear and present. A path winds through scree and remnants of snow, leading the gaze toward the barely visible refuge at the foot of the rock face, a small human outpost in a landscape of stone and fog.

The monochrome black and white highlights the materiality of the rock and the evanescent fluidity of the clouds: the mountain reveals itself and hides, solid at its base yet almost immaterial at its summit, vanishing into the gray sky. The vertical composition emphasizes the rock formation’s momentum, while the path creates a diagonal line that draws the eye deeper into the landscape, inviting us to traverse it.

This photograph is part of Monica’s exploration of the mountain as a space of transience: it captures a unique atmospheric moment, when the fog transforms the Dolomites into a place suspended between reality and vision. The Alpine landscape here becomes a meditation on limits, on presence and absence, on nature’s ability to manifest itself and disappear at the same time.
