Oceanic Humanity is an immersive light installation that materializes the invisible connection between the human body and the ocean. Composed of three monumental light cubes, it was created in collaboration with One Ocean Foundation, an organization committed to marine conservation through science, culture, and education.

Description

Through digital manipulation, Avvassena fuses X-rays of different people with microphotographs of plankton, creating a hybrid visual language where two seemingly distant worlds are revealed to be deeply intertwined.

The fluid images flowing across the cubes generate kaleidoscopic organic forms—pink, purple, orange, and blue—that simultaneously reflect the fragility of the human body and the intricate complexity of marine life.

The work invites the viewer to pause before this biological revelation: we are made of the same material as the ocean.

Human skeletal structures and the microscopic forms of plankton interact in a luminous ballet that speaks of a shared biological and rhythmic origin. Just as plankton is at the base of the marine food chain and produces over 50% of the oxygen we breathe, our bodies bear traces of that ancient aquatic origin.

In the context of the Anthropocene, Oceanic Humanity takes on a critical and urgent dimension: the installation underscores how the health of the ocean is inseparable from our survival. The hypnotic beauty of the images contrasts with the awareness of the marine ecological crisis—acidification, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss—transforming the work into a visual appeal for collective responsibility.

The three luminous structures, visible even from afar, act as beacons of awareness in the urban fabric of Milan, inviting passers-by to stop, observe and reflect on the profound interconnection that links every human breath to the breath of the ocean.
